Metered
taxis will be available in Khon Kaen from January 20 and the new
service should not affect tuk-tuk and motorcycle taxis because the
target market is different, the business operator said yesterday
Garage Khon Kaen, which invested Bt20 million on the service, will initially have 30 taxis working round the clock and would add another 49 next year, executive
Chaiyan Pleawthong said. The meter rate would start at Bt30 and
increase by Bt4 per kilometre after the third kilometre, he said. The taxis ill be available at 16 stands. Customers can also call for a cab at (043) 465 777-87 for an additional fee of Bt30.
Chaiyan added that the service was targeted at residents outside the Muang district and late-night travellers

I disagree with the should not affect tuk-tuk: last month a tik tik charged me 80 Baht from Fairy to Toyota on Mitrapap Road. next time I will take a taxi for 30 Baht! Regards Thedi

A welcomed and needed improvement to Khon Kaen!
I just had to go to KKC Airport from the Khangsadan (KKU) area. The tuk tuk was arranged for me for a price of 200 baht. My gf and I jammed into that tuk tuk with our baggage and bounced our way out to the airport. When we got there, the driver wanted 300 baht!! Enough of this nonsense!
I hope there is no trouble made for the new taxi service by the existing tuk tuk drivers. The tuk tuk drivers have nobody to blame but themselves.

You call call Avis at the KKC Airport and book a "taxi." They are very reliable and will pick you up at your house in real car, and take you to the airport for 250 THB. K. Geaw has limited English. Have someone call who speaks Thai or send an SMS. Same applies to return from airport to town.

Yes, Avis has been an option in the past, although expensive. I'm not sure if they have been quoting a flat rate of 250 baht for anywhere in Muang Khon Kaen, but that is what they charged me to the Khangsadan area near KKU. It seems steep compared to BKK Metered taxi prices. Hopefully the new metered taxi service in Khon Kaen will be similar to BKK (on pricing) and a better way to go.

Will be a welcome service. I got a taxi from one of the stands near the Pullman to Udon. Was charged 2300 baht, a rip off I know, but needed to get a flight as all the KK ones were full. Usual story, they only think about today, and dont realize that they miss out on a lot of repeat business because of their short-sightedness. Wont be using them again and look forward to the taxi service!

2300 from khon kaen to udon???what do you think would be a fair price???i wouldnt have a clue but it would be very unlikely that the guy's going to get a return fair to cover the fuel etc,so to me its 2300 for the round trip??

BKK airport (swampi) to Khon Kaen is 4500 Baht: official price at the Taxi queue.
I use them whenever I arrive from Switzerland and all the drivers were more than happy with the job and price.
BKK-KKC is 450km, 6 to 7 hours, if there are no traffic congestions. KKC-Udon is about 120 km in less than is 2 hours.
The new announced Metered Taxis would charge 510 Baht for 120 km.
So 2300 Baht looks like a bit costy to me. But we got used to it. tuk tuk and song taeo in KKC taught us: if business is going slow: increase the prices and reduce service in compensation...
I certainly hope the new Taxis will bring a new wind to the public transport business in Khon Kaen town.
Regards
Thedi

Thedi,
Just curious. Why don't you stay overnight at a hotel close to the airport and then fly BKK-KCC. Probably less than 4,500 THB and a lot more comfortable. You could also fly BKK-Udon cheap, and then a taxi to KKC would only be a couple of hours. 6 hours in a taxi doesn't sound like much fun. I would rather take the midnight Nakonchai Air (bus) for 500 THB and sleep all the way in those BIG, reclining seats. Wake up, and you are in KKC.
Aloha,
Rex

Yes thats right Thedi, Ive also had taxis from both Bangkok and Pattaya to Khon Kaen at the price you say, and I doubt wether they had a return fare. Also just prior to that had a taxi from SiSaket to Khon Kaen for 3000 baht, so when I compare the travelling time between the two, 3hrs vs just over an hour, it didnt quite add up. So Pops, if you compare the two there is a big difference, it certainly didnt break the bank, but I guess my point is that with the new taxi service available there will be less of personal interpretation on what a "fair" price would be. However 2300 Baht would be a great price in a western country, but we are in Thailand, and I seriously doubt wether a Thai would be charged the same.
